It frustrates me that these plastic trees are so often put on the table unpainted - OK they come with brown trunks and green canopies but - really - they do look so much better painted just the same way you would paint them if they were supplied unpainted and plain coloured ...
(cheap plastic palms on some of my 'African' tiles ... and, insert, unpainted)
Now I'm not claiming this is great art or ingenuity - just that, painted, they look so much better than plain. These are just primed in Humbrol sand or green, then (for the the trunks) 'dipped' in Antique Pine or (for the canopies) dry brushed in pale green (actually an acrylic emerald ...) ..
They are glued onto doubled 2ps to give them weight, with filler bedded up around the bottom to root them in.
I already have quite a few of the smaller cake decoration palms, so this batch are mostly the bigger ones which gives a bit more variety and scale flexibility to the palm groves and undergrowth ...
... with 54mm toy cavalry ...
... with 30mm Egyptian chariotry ...
... with 15mm early nomads ...
I think they work quite nicely with the full range ... Best with the 30mm flats, maybe - but that's a result in itself.
The nice thing about an evening basing and preparing terrain is that when it's done it is usually done ... it looks good and you get endless use, generally without any further effort.
In amongst that lot you might have noticed one or two smaller trees and a flat plastic quadruple base (from a toy set but looking good to me) ...
